Spelling Bee is one of my favorite shows. It’s a show that presents itself as a cute and quirky musical based around the idea of a spelling bee, but as we continue and unpack the production, it shows itself to be a much more emotional and deep production. My design for Spelling Bee was focused on creating a base layer of a fun feeling gym, and then completely shifting that when the show called for it, moments like the I Love You Song, a hauntingly beautiful moment of heartbreak. There were also multiple reoccurring moments in spelling bee, such as the one on the right, where a specific character’s unique quirks make them in charge of the space, where the space previously was in charge of them.
